The formal name for 5F-AKB48 powder is 1-pentyl-N-tricyclodec-1-yl-1H-indazole-3-carboxamide, and sometimes it is referred to as APINACA. It was initially discovered in Japan in 2012, and researchers have quickly latched onto it as a promising chemical for research. There is speculation that the chemical is named after the AKB-48 girl band that’s popular in Japan. The molecular formula of AKB-48 is C23H31N3O.

This chemical belongs to the synthetic cannabinoid group, and it’s a pentyl indazole which mimics a few other synthetic cannabinoids. The physiological effects of this chemical have not yet been precisely identified, but products that are similar to it have a high affinity for peripheral CB2 but also much reduced affinity for central CB1.

AKB-48 is a synthetic cannabinoid that was originally discovered in Japan. It is said that the compound was named after a famous Japanese pop band of the same name. The 5F-AKB48 is a fluorinated version of the former. Chemically, it is known as 1 – pentyl -N- tricyclo [3.3.1.13, 7] dec -1- yl – 1H – indazole -3- carboxamide. It is available in a powder form through different research chemicals manufacturers and is commonly referred to as APINACA.


5F-AKB48 has the molecular representation C23H30FN3O which is a slight modification to its parent compound C23H31N3O. The added fluorine provides APINACA a distinct set of properties that were absent in AKB-48. Due to increased drug abuse, the AKB-48 was classified as a controlled substance and subsequently banned in many countries. The fluorine enables the 5F-AKB48 to be classified as a different drug, although it can be used for the same purposes. Due to this reason, this compound has attracted great attention from researchers across the world. However, it is manufactured for only research purposes, and any form of human consumption is strictly prohibited.


Since cannabinoids are derived from the cannabis plant, this synthetic cannabinoid also replicates the effects of marijuana. The endocannabinoids CB-1 and CB-2 seem to respond quite well to this compound.
